Santorini Arrival
Santorini is our final destination.
We will be here for a week with a few days of wind and one of rain predicted.
Very windy leaving Naxos and “super fast” ferries were cancelled.
Luckily we’re booked on a “regular” ferry.
Saying goodbye to Naxos.
This is our ferry docked at Santorini (and a cruise ship in the background).
The cruise ships moor off shore of Nea Kameni and passengers take a tender over to Santorini.
The shadowy mountains behind Nea Kameni are Thirassia which is a separate and populated island.
Nea Kameni is the volcano that erupted around 1650 BCE that created the caldera that is Santorini.
The inside of the caldera is steep and impressive.
Parts of it resemble the Grand Canyon.
This is the “old” port and the village of Fira.
Looks a lot like the “new” port and the village of Megalochori.
This is the village of Oia (EEya) where we are staying (circled in red).
We had been told that Naxos was the greenest of the Cycladic islands.
The dry landscape and lack of natural greenery was very apparent when our ferry
stopped briefly at Ios and when we were driving around the backside of Santorini.
Oia is the tourist destination of Santorini.
Everyone wants a picture of the sunset and the “three blue domes” (more on this in a future post).
