Santorini “sailing” and Jeff’s 70th birthday

 Our boat, Aphrodite, is the tall one.






Though it is a sailboat we were motoring, not sailing.










We visited Nea Kameni and got to “hike” to the summit.

Up close it is obvious this is a volcanic landscape.

Lots of iron oxide leaches out of the lava; you can see the red-orange right at the water line.

820’ of elevation gain in 2 miles. 

That’s an 8% grade with tour busses, tour vans, taxis, and semis w/ trailer going both ways.







The zigzags get shorter on the right in the area that’s in the cloud shadow.

This is also Athens

This is also Athens Friends from Turin Italy joined us for the first couple of days and we toured the Acropolis and Parthenon together.  Also a food walking tour (forgot to take any photos but it was delicious).  There are stray cats everywhere.  There are cat food bowls tucked all over the place for the kitties. Some kitties even get places to sleep. Bitter orange trees are also everywhere.  Apparently the fruit is inedible but the scent of the flowers at this time of year is delightful.  No idea what happens to the cars parked below when the ripe fruit starts to fall. Profusion of spring wildflowers Benaki Museum in Athens is really ten different museums.  After spending four hours in the National Archaeological Museum (not a Benaki) we skipped  every other museum except for the Benaki Nema Passamenterie.  It was amazing and not a museum at all but an active workplace (we did not expect that but we were certainly not disappointe...

Santorini photos

  These are the places that all the Santorini tourists are trying to photograph. We had the luxury of being here for a week so there were days (with no cruise ships) that were less crowded/difficult. We also had mostly beautiful sunny days which always looks nice in photos. The “three bells of Fira” with the volcano Nea Kameni in the background. A view of Fira with the mountain Prophet Ilias in the background. More church bells. One of many blue-domed churches. Two different sources have given different figures for the number of churches on Santorini. Whether it’s 600 or 1000 it’s A LOT. The swarm of earthquakes has been finished for a couple of months. This image shows where they were in relation to Santorini. Darker colors are deeper earthquakes. There was no damage on Santorini (no building cracks, broken windows, etc). Santorini Agriculture (and some cats)

We were unaware of the windmills of Santorini. At one point there were likely 60-70 and they were used to grind barley and other grains into flour. Now they are kitschy accommodations for tourists. Probably only stray cats spending the night in this windmill. Considering that Santorini has NO source of fresh water and only 11” of annual rainfall it is hard to imagine growing so much grain that they needed 60-70 windmills.  But, apparently barley doesn’t need much water.  Water for cooking and bathing is provided by a desalination plant outside Oia (where we are staying). That water is not recommended for drinking so bottled water is imported for drinking. Some households do collect rainwater but it doesn’t amount to much. Tomatoes are often more intensely flavored when they get no supplemental water.  So they do great on Santorini. At one point there were nine tomato processing plants on Santorini.
